Help build Makagi Oti, the Brown Earth Lodge, at Standing Rock
The community at the Oceti Sakowin encampments at Standing Rock has plans to build a straw bale community center - a four season structure that will hold 80-100 people, and will provide a kitchen and central gathering place for those camped in resistance to the Dakota Access pipeline.
Straw bale buildings are affordable, energy efficient, and ecologically friendly, providing effective insulation from natural, non-toxic materials. A temporary structure built this November will be converted to a permanent structure come spring.
Plans are to finish the center by Thanksgiving when a delegation of donors from around the country will bring Thanksgiving dinner to share with the community as another expression of gratitude.
Groups planning the community center include Honor the Earth, Indigenous Environmental Network, and the Intertribal Council on Utility Policy.
The budget for the center with kitchen is $75,000, so that is our goal for this fundraising effort.
Any funds raised above that goal will go toward further winterizing the camp, such as building solar tiny houses.
All donations are tax-deductible.
